Rep. Schmaltz seeks state grant to equip Advanced Manufacturing Training Center in Jackson
RELEASE|February 27, 2026

Project focuses on creating successful career paths for students

State Rep. Kathy Schmaltz (R-Jackson) is advocating for a $200,000 investment through the state budget process to finalize the operational capacity of the Advanced Manufacturing Training Center in Jackson by equipping the facility with state-of-the-art Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machinery.

Schmaltz recently testified before a budget subcommittee alongside Kelly Burr Kofflin, Executive Director of the Shop Rat Foundation, emphasizing the importance of completing the training center to prepare students for careers in high-demand industries.

“The Shop Rat Foundation and Jackson Area Manufacturers Association have already raised more than $3.8 million to secure this facility and build the necessary infrastructure,” Schmaltz said. “This $200,000 investment is the last mile funding that will provide students with the hands-on tools they need to master modern industrial technologies. The community has stepped up, and now I’m hoping the state can help finish this critical project.”

The requested funding would purchase CNC machinery, enabling the center to house 16 pieces of equipment exclusively for educational purposes. This training is essential to meet industry needs in automotive, biomedical, aerospace, and other sectors facing a shortage of skilled workers.

“What the Advanced Manufacturing Training Center does is complement existing entities like Jackson College and the Career Center in being able to increase capacity for training in a multifaceted way,” said Kelly Burr Kofflin, Executive Director of the Shop Rat Foundation. “This center is open to both youth and adult learners, enabling us to expand career exploration and awareness for youth so that they understand what careers in this sector look like.”

Schmaltz said the funding represents a one-time investment that will complete the Advanced Manufacturing Training Center, ensuring students have access to the tools and experience needed to succeed in high-demand technical fields.
