State Rep. David W. Martin (R-Davison) today led the Michigan House Committee on Natural Resources and Tourism in passing two resolutions focused on preserving the Great Lakes and protecting American energy. Martin is the chair of the committee and strongly supports both resolutions.
House Resolution 77 urges Illinois Governor JB Pritzker to resume construction of the Brandon Road Interbasin Project to block the spread of invasive Asian carp. In 2020, Michigan and Illinois signed an intergovernmental agreement to finalize the plan. Although Gov. Pritzker paused the project in February 2025 due to federal funding concerns, President Trump has since pledged support for the project, removing that obstacle. The resolution calls on Illinois to honor its 2020 agreement with Michigan and move forward with construction.
“The Brandon Road Project is critical for the defense of our Great Lakes from Asian carp,” Martin said. “It’s both extremely important, and time-sensitive, that Gov. Pritzker honors Illinois’ agreement to get this project underway. The Great Lakes hold a special place in all our hearts, and I will always stand up to protect them from invasive species.”
Martin’s committee also took up House Resolution 91, which voices support for President Trump’s energy policies, which have facilitated emergency permitting for the Enbridge Line 5 tunnel project.
“Our state and our country are stronger when we have a powerful and well-maintained energy infrastructure,” Martin said. “Line 5’s new tunnel will continue to provide necessary amounts of oil and natural gas to our state and lower the cost of energy for our residents. If we care about keeping energy costs reasonable for our residents, as lawmakers, it is fundamental we support Line 5 and get this project underway as soon as possible.”
Both resolutions passed the committee Wednesday afternoon. House Resolution 77 passed on the House floor immediately following the committee and House Resolution 91 is headed to the floor next week.
