Measures aim to improve care for veterans at state homes, other facilities

State Rep. David Martin this week introduced a measure to help combat the abuse of Michigan veterans.

The state created the Michigan Veterans’ Facility Ombudsman in 2016 after a state audit revealed the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans failed to properly investigate allegations of abuse and neglect. Martin, an Air Force veteran, said the bipartisan plan he is sponsoring will ensure the ombudsman’s office has the tools it needs to investigate allegations of abuse and neglect.

“The men and women who bravely put their lives on the line to protect our freedom deserve the best of care,” said Martin, of Davison. “Abuse or neglect will not be tolerated in our state veteran homes.”

House Bills 6080-84 and 6142 give the Michigan Veterans’ Facility Ombudsman clear authority to independently investigate claims of abuse and neglect within state veteran facilities. It also requires the ombudsman and the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs to share information regarding abuse and neglect investigations with each other.

Another part of the plan ensures that county veteran service officers are informed about reports of veteran abuse or neglect that occur outside a state veteran home.

The plan was referred to the House Military, Veterans, and Homeland Security Committee for consideration.
