Frederick: Six grants awarded to local job providers for workforce training
RELEASE|December 20, 2021

Going PRO initiative continues after being jeopardized by veto in 2019

State Rep. Ben Frederick today announced six grants have been awarded to local employers from the Going PRO Talent Fund.

The Going PRO initiative awards completive grants to employers to invest in training and enhancing the skills and talent of their workforce. Training must fill a demonstrated talent need experienced by the employer and lead to a credential for a skill that is transferable and recognized by industry.

Frederick, of Owosso, successfully fought for the program’s funding to be restored for 2021-22 after the governor vetoed it in 2019.

“This is a phenomenal program that helps hardworking people advance their careers and increase their earning potential by gaining industry-recognized credentials. It also meets the needs of local employers searching for skilled individuals to fill vacant positions,” Frederick said. “I worked to restore funding for this program because there is a real need for workforce training, especially for adult learners who want to advance their careers. It’s great to see local employers taking advantage of this opportunity.”

Grants awarded in the Shiawassee area include:

  • Midwest Bus Corporation in Owosso, $35,292
  • Vibrant Life Senior Living in Durand, $30,000
  • Jetool in Chesaning, $21,383
  • Durand, $28,700 and $18,423 (two grants)
  • Durand Senior Care and Rehab Center, $12,000

Since the program’s launch in 2014, the Going PRO Talent Fund has supported more than 150,000 workers with training.
